Lebanese Leaders Demand State Sovereignty and an End to "Militia Logic" Amid Political Crisis

In a series of incisive statements published by the media outlet L'Orient-Le Jour, Lebanon's top authorities have expressed the urgent need for a structural political overhaul in the country. President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam came forward with firm demands targeting national sovereignty, the disarmament of parallel groups, and compliance with institutional agreements.

In his statement, the President of the Lebanese Republic, Joseph Aoun, warned that the nation has reached a historic turning point. According to the leader, the country's future depends on choosing between strengthening legitimate institutions or perpetuating social fragmentation.

"Lebanon finds itself today faced with a decisive choice: either its children unite around a sovereign State, or the country remains a prisoner to the logic of militias and the culture of exclusion," Aoun stated.

 

The President also emphasized that social stability can no longer be treated superficially, calling for concrete actions to build just governance. "National unity is no longer a slogan brandished during ceremonies; it is an existential necessity built on openness, strengthened by justice, and rooted in fairness toward all components of the people, without exception," he added.

Focus on Hezbollah and Compliance with Agreements

Reinforcing the tone of demand for stability, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam directed his criticisms straight at Hezbollah's armed wing. While acknowledging the group's legitimacy as a political actor within the country's parliamentary ecosystem, Salam emphasized that the existence of a parallel military arsenal prevents the advancement of State sovereignty.

"Our problem with Hezbollah is its weapons. We consider the party as a Lebanese political force and we want it to respect its Lebanese commitments. All we ask of it is to keep its promises," the Prime Minister declared.

 

Salam also made a direct appeal to the group's leaders and their supporters regarding their responsibility for the suffering of the civilian population resulting from political and military tensions. "If you are truly concerned about what you call your environment and the suffering of your environment, all that is asked of you is to respect your commitments. We ask for nothing more," the Premier concluded.

The strong declarations from the Executive and the Armed Forces signal a coordinated pressure for Lebanon to reclaim its legitimate monopoly on force and stabilize its internal political borders, at a time when the international community closely watches developments in the region.
