European Union Unlocks Talks and Announces Formal Launch of Accession Process for Ukraine and Moldova

In a move considered a geopolitical milestone for the continent, the European Union (EU) has officially announced that the accession process for Ukraine and Moldova will launch next Monday in Luxembourg. The decision was consolidated this Friday after ambassadors from the bloc’s 27 nations reached a consensus in Brussels, opening the first negotiation cluster, which focuses on "fundamentals" and the rule of law.

The breakthrough in negotiations follows a crucial political shift in Hungary. The new Hungarian government, led by Prime Minister Péter Magyar—who took power in May—agreed to drop the historic veto that his predecessor, Viktor Orbán, had maintained against Kyiv’s bid. The unblocking was made possible after a recent agreement between Budapest and Kyiv regarding the rights of the Hungarian ethnic minority in Ukrainian territory.

In a joint social media post, European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen celebrated the milestone:

"This is a recognition of the determination, courage and hard work shown by both countries in advancing reforms, even in the face of immense challenges. In a world marked by growing uncertainty, a larger European Union is in our common interest."

The Long Road Ahead and the Geopolitical Factor

Although opening the negotiation chapters is a significant diplomatic victory for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the government of Moldova—both of whom view EU membership as a vital line of defense against Russian expansionism—the road to full integration remains long.

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has already signaled that, despite dropping the initial veto, Hungary will not support a "fast-track" procedure. Magyar stated that Budapest intends to hold a national referendum on Ukraine’s membership should the country succeed in closing all 33 accession chapters, a complex task that the Hungarian government itself estimates will take between 10 and 15 years.

The opening of dialogues focuses initially on the "fundamentals" section, which requires candidate countries to implement deep reforms in the judicial system, combat corruption, and align with Western democratic standards.

About the EU Accession Process:

The European Union enlargement process is a rigorous procedure divided into thematic chapters covering areas ranging from agriculture and fiscal policies to human rights. Final approval requires the unanimous consent of all current member states of the bloc.
