Lebanon backs global Peace Agreement and demands immediate, unrestricted ceasefire on its territory

Following the joint announcement by Donald Trump and the Prime Minister of Pakistan, the Lebanese government and local forces condition the treaty's effectiveness on the definitive end of Israeli incursions and the guarantee of national sovereignty.

The government of Lebanon and its institutional leadership have formally expressed their backing for the diplomatic negotiations that culminated in the announcement of the historic Peace Agreement and comprehensive ceasefire, jointly orchestrated by the United States and Pakistan. The treaty, which mandates the immediate and permanent termination of all military operations in the region, explicitly includes the Lebanese front as a central component for the stabilization of the Middle East.

Beirut's diplomacy views the agreement—built with the strategic acquiescence of Washington, Islamabad, and Tehran—as fulfilling a rigorous demand of the Lebanese State: that any large-scale regional pact must mandatory cover the cessation of hostilities on Lebanese soil and the withdrawal of foreign forces. With the terms entering into effect, the Executive reaffirms its national security plan for the regular Lebanese Army to assume exclusive and sovereign control over the south of the country.

Last-minute tensions and safeguarding the treaty

The announcement of the agreement comes amid extreme sensitivity, just hours after an Israeli airstrike struck the southern suburbs of Beirut. The incident placed local forces and Hezbollah on high alert. However, alignment with the directives from Tehran—which officially confirmed its commitment to ending mutual attacks—points toward the practical implementation of the military pullback, provided all provocations from Tel Aviv cease.

Swift intervention by international mediators was decisive in containing the escalation. In an official statement, U.S. President Donald Trump sharply criticized the airstrike on Beirut, classifying it as an action that "should not have happened" and demanding the immediate suspension of further Israeli attacks against Lebanon, as well as the halt of any counter-offensives by Hezbollah.

Next steps and the Switzerland Summit

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Lebanese government's official channels are now concentrating their efforts on technical preparations for the official Peace Agreement signing ceremony, scheduled for next Friday, June 19, in Switzerland.

Lebanon's priority focus in the multilateral panels will be the requirement for rigid international monitoring mechanisms. The government in Beirut emphasizes that lasting peace will depend on unrestricted respect for Lebanese territorial integrity and a definitive end to violations of its sovereignty starting this Monday.
