G7 Summit in France to Debate Trade Tensions with the US and Energy Transition with Brazil’s Presence

G7 Summit in France to Debate Trade Tensions with the US and Energy Transition with Brazil’s Presence

Heads of State and Government from the world's largest economies are gathering this Monday (15) in Évian-les-Bains, in the French Alps, for the G7 Summit. The meeting, which runs until June 17, takes place amid heightened diplomatic apprehension, dominated by U.S. tariff threats and the search for consensus on conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is participating in the bloc's expanded sessions as a strategic guest.

The economic backdrop of the summit is marked by the upcoming review of the USMCA trade agreement (United States, Canada, and Mexico), scheduled for July 1. Faced with signals from U.S. President Donald Trump that he may not renew the treaty and could impose new tariff barriers, G7 leaders have been moving to secure safeguards. In a demonstration of prior alignment, French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney sealed robust bilateral agreements in defense and artificial intelligence ahead of the forum's commencement.

On the international security agenda, the G7 seeks to coordinate actions with Washington to maintain global stability. Debates focus on tightening financial sanctions against the tanker fleet funding the Russian war effort in Ukraine and on structuring mechanisms for a lasting de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, aimed at protecting vital maritime routes.

Brazil at the Center of Global Discussions

Invited to the expanded dialogue panels, Brazil assumes an articulating role between the G7 and major emerging economies. President Lula's agenda in France is divided into three main pillars:

June 16 (Tuesday) – International Partnerships:** Focus on global governance reform and supply chain resilience.

June 17 (Wednesday) – Balanced Economic Growth: Discussions on energy transition, sustainable development, and the role of critical minerals.

June 17 (Wednesday) – Artificial Intelligence: Participation in a working lunch dedicated to digital regulation and ethics in AI development.

Behind the scenes, Brazilian diplomacy is working to arrange a direct bilateral meeting between President Lula and Donald Trump on French soil. The main objective of the delegation is to open a channel of dialogue to mitigate the impacts of proposed U.S. surcharges on Brazilian exports. Following the conclusion of the summit, attention will shift to the Palace of Versailles, where Macron will host Trump for a high-level bilateral meeting.
