Statement by the President of the Lebanese Republic, General Joseph Aoun, on the Memorandum of Understanding between the US and Iran

The President of the Lebanese Republic, General Joseph Aoun, issued the following official statement:

"I have followed with great interest the announcement of the memorandum of understanding reached between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran, as well as the affirmation contained therein regarding the cessation of military actions and escalation in the region, which includes Lebanon.

In this context, I value the respect for Lebanese specificity expressed in this memorandum, as well as the recognition that Lebanon's stability and security are an integral part of any serious effort to consolidate stability in the region—especially after the enormous sacrifices and heavy burdens that the Lebanese people have borne during the past period.

The Lebanese people, particularly the residents of the regions that were subjected to attacks and destruction, and who lost loved ones, their livelihoods, and their homes, look forward today to these understandings being translated into practical steps. Measures that will put a definitive end to the cycle of violence and establish a new phase of stability, security, recovery, and reconstruction.

I also express my gratitude to all countries and parties that contributed to the realization of this memorandum, and to all those who worked to include Lebanon in the efforts aimed at ending the escalation and halting military actions on various fronts, based on their awareness of the magnitude of the suffering endured by the Lebanese over the past months.

Lebanon hopes that this development will represent the beginning of a broader path that strengthens stability in the region, preserves the sovereignty of States and the rights of their peoples, and allows the Lebanese to dedicate themselves to rebuilding what was destroyed and restoring their normal lives, under the protection of a safe and stable State."
