Brazilian Diplomacy Seeks Emergency Bilateral Meeting with Trump Delegation at G7 to Restrain Tariff Barriers

Brazil's diplomatic representation has launched a behind-the-scenes offensive at the G7 Summit in Évian-les-Bains to mitigate the impact of new trade directives signaled by Washington. Sources close to the national delegation confirm that the country is considering extending the stay of its technical and diplomatic teams on French soil with the sole purpose of securing a direct bilateral negotiation with U.S. President Donald Trump's delegation.

The move comes amid significant volatility in global markets, driven by the upcoming review of the USMCA trade agreement (United States, Canada, and Mexico) and signals from the White House regarding the adoption of a highly protectionist tariff stance. For the Brazilian productive sector, the primary warning signs are flashing for the manufacturing, steel, and agricultural commodity industries, which are historically vulnerable to surcharges in the U.S. market.

Although Brazil's official agenda at the summit includes participation in expanded panels on energy transition and technological regulation, the priority for economic coordinators and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Itamaraty) has shifted to the diplomatic corridors. The strategy to extend the schedule in Évian aims to open a direct line of dialogue with Trump's team before the U.S. delegation concludes its official engagements and proceeds to the state meeting scheduled with the French government at the Palace of Versailles.

According to officials monitoring the negotiations, the Brazilian technical corps intends to present data proving that the imposition of blanket tariffs disrupts highly integrated global value chains. The ultimate goal is to pave the way for the concession of safeguards or exemption frameworks for Brazilian products, preventing multi-billion dollar losses to the country's trade balance.
