Livraria Lello and Dua Lipa’s Service95 Inaugurate the "Manifesto Library" in Porto to Celebrate Freedom of Expression

A permanent space dedicated to censored and banned books combines architecture by Álvaro Siza Vieira and international curation in the city's historic center.

In an unprecedented initiative connecting pop culture, historical heritage, and literary activism, Livraria Lello and the Service95 Book Club—an editorial platform founded by British artist Dua Lipa—announce the establishment of the Manifesto Library (Biblioteca Manifesto), located within the cultural space of the iconic Porto bookstore.

Exclusively dedicated to hosting, preserving, and exhibiting works that have faced censorship, bans, or challenges throughout history, the Manifesto Library was born as a permanent symbol of resistance and defense for the free flow of ideas. The physical space, designed by the prestigious Pritzker Prize–winning Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, offers an atmosphere for reflection and open debate on human rights and freedom of thought.

The initial curation features 100 essential titles of global reach, organized around four fundamental thematic axes:

Power: Works reflecting on authoritarianism and political structures, such as 1984 (George Orwell) and The Second Sex (Simone de Beauvoir).

Control: Titles addressing surveillance and the loss of individual autonomy, including The Handmaid's Tale (Margaret Atwood) and The Trial (Franz Kafka).

Voice: Narratives giving voice to marginalized perspectives or those challenged by social and religious dogmas, such as The Satanic Verses (Salman Rushdie) and The Color Purple (Alice Walker).

Memory: Records focused on ancestry, historical preservation, and cultural identity, highlighting contemporary Lusophone literature, such as Olhos D'Água by Brazilian author Conceição Evaristo.

Censored literature is often the kind that carries the most urgent truths. The Manifesto Library is an invitation for readers of all generations to question, learn, and protect the freedom to create and read without fear.

The project also features the collaboration and support of global activists and artists, such as Chinese visual artist Ai Weiwei, reinforcing the commitment to turn the city of Porto into an international hub for literary tourism and debates on freedom of expression.

The Manifesto Library is open to the public in Livraria Lello's cultural space, featuring an ongoing program of debates, gatherings, and public readings.
