Germany reinforces strategic alliance with Ukraine and announces over €8.5 billion in financial and military support in Kyiv

Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz made an unannounced visit to Kyiv to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The high-level meeting resulted in the announcement of an immediate €1.3 billion assistance package aimed at strengthening the country's defense against the recent escalation of attacks on energy and transport infrastructure.

The meeting formalized the signing of 15 bilateral agreements and documents projecting continuous support exceeding €8.5 billion. The agreements cover defense technology transfers, joint industrial procurement, and direct funding to rebuild and stabilize the Ukrainian power grid ahead of the colder months.

Cooperation package highlights:

Air Defense Innovation: A commitment to deliver long-range weapons and supply approximately 1,000 high-speed interceptor drones designed to neutralize jet-powered aircraft and drones.

Industrial Cooperation: Partnerships for the joint production of security equipment and supplies on Ukrainian territory.

Energy Security: Allocation of resources to shield power generation and distribution systems frequently targeted by Russian offensives.

The arrival of the German delegation coincided with new air raid alerts and strikes on logistical targets in Kyiv, including a drone hit on the North Bridge over the Dnipro River, underscoring the tense situation in the capital.

Commenting on the commitments, Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the importance of regional stability:

"Ukraine faces decisive weeks and months ahead. My presence in Kyiv reinforces that German support remains steadfast. Ukrainian sovereignty and European security are inseparable."

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the German government, noting that the new agreements represent a crucial step in ensuring Ukraine's defensive capacity and civilian resilience in the upcoming phases of the conflict.
