Ukraine’s air defense infrastructure faced a critical scenario early Saturday morning (Aug 1) following one of the most intense aerial strikes of the year. The offensive launched by Russia involved 185 strike drones and 35 missiles, 27 of which were ballistic vectors.

Despite a high efficacy rate against lower-speed vectors—resulting in the interception and neutralization of 154 drones through mobile units and new unmanned systems—the country's heavy air defense suffered a severe limitation in high-performance interception: of the 27 ballistic missiles launched against Kyiv and other regions, only 1 was intercepted. Direct impacts on residential areas in the capital left at least nine dead and dozens injured.

In an official address following the strikes, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that the low neutralization rate does not stem from operational or radar failures, but rather from the physical exhaustion of missile stockpiles for Patriot and SAMP-T systems.

"This shortage of ballistic missile interceptors is exactly what encourages Russia to launch such attacks that take human lives," stated President Zelenskyy.
