MYKHAILO DRAPATYI ASSUMES COMMAND OF THE ARMED FORCES OF UKRAINE
Appointment signals a generational transition, focus on troop modernization, and renewal of Ukrainian military strategy.
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has officialized the appointment of Major-General Mykhailo Drapatyi as the new Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Drapatyi succeeds General Oleksandr Syrskyi at a decisive moment for the reorganization and strengthening of national defense.
Recognized as one of the most prestigious figures of the "new generation" of Ukrainian officers, the 43-year-old commander has built a career defined by battlefield leadership and operational rigor. Drapatyi gained national prominence in 2014 during defensive operations in Mariupol and consolidated his strategic role in leading the defense of Kryvyi Rih and the liberation of Kherson in 2022. Recently, he distinguished himself at the helm of the Kharkiv Operational-Tactical Group and in command of the Land Forces.
Drapatyi’s elevation to the top of the military command reflects a push for leadership adapted to the dynamics of the contemporary battlefield. Priority guidelines for the new command include:
Personnel preservation: Continuous focus on the value of human life and efficient management of troops on the front lines.
Technological innovation: Modernization of operational doctrine and aggressive integration of autonomous systems.
Culture of accountability: Strengthening discipline, operational security, and transparency across the chain of command.
"The appointment of Major-General Drapatyi represents the consolidation of a modern, ethical, and pragmatic military vision. His leadership combines direct experience on the country's most critical fronts with an unyielding commitment to the morale and safety of our fighters," the presidency stated in a release.
The command transition is already underway, and new operational directives for the eastern and southern fronts are expected to be presented to regional commands in the coming days.
