Ukraine’s political and defense landscape experienced decisive developments following the dismissal of Minister Mykhailo Fedorov from the helm of the Ministry of Defense, a position he had held since early 2026. Renowned for modernizing the Armed Forces through the large-scale deployment of drones, cyber warfare, and process debureaucratization, Fedorov’s departure exposed internal tensions within the government and triggered public demonstrations across the nation.
The dismissal occurred amid intense friction between Fedorov’s administration and the military high command, led by Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, General Oleksandr Syrskyi. Disagreements over the pace of implementing technological innovations and administrative reforms on the front lines strained relations between the technocratic wing and the traditional military leadership.
The presidential decision sparked protests in Kyiv and other cities, mobilizing civilians, soldiers, and veterans who demanded changes in the military command and the preservation of modernization reforms. In response to the political fallout, the Presidency reassigned Fedorov to a new leadership role focused exclusively on consolidating and managing the state's technological capacity and innovation.
During this transition period, the Ministry of Defense remains under the interim management of Yevhenii Khmara, as the government works to restore institutional stability and maintain the continuity of strategic operations.
