US proposes peace "roadmap" in Lebanon amid Israeli advance and worsening humanitarian crisis

In an effort to contain the deepening conflict in the Middle East, the United States government has put forward a formal "roadmap" proposal for the de-escalation of hostilities in Lebanon. The diplomatic initiative was confirmed by a US official to the Al Jazeera network, detailing that Secretary of State Marco Rubio led separate bilateral talks with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Washington plan seeks to create a conducive environment for a gradual reduction of tensions and a complete, comprehensive cessation of all hostilities, establishing a direct trade-off:

Hezbollah's Commitment: Total cessation of all attacks launched against Israel.

Israel's Commitment: Refraining from further incursions and airstrikes against the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

Pressure on Hezbollah and Iran's Role

Despite its mediating role, Washington adopted a firm tone by placing the responsibility for the current round of fighting on Hezbollah, accusing the organization of following directives from Tehran without regard for the interests and safety of the Lebanese people. According to the US official, Iran has been deliberately prolonging the conflict to position itself as a mediator in the future.

"The quickest way to protect civilians and reduce escalation is for Hezbollah to cease fire immediately," the US government official stated, emphasizing that Washington does not expect Israel to tolerate continued attacks against its civilians.

Military Advance and the Capture of Beaufort

While diplomacy attempts to broker a deal, operations on the ground are advancing rapidly. Last Sunday, the Israel Defense Forces captured the historic Beaufort Castle (Qalaat al-Shaqif), a medieval fortress that served as an operational base during the two-decade Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon, which ended in 2000.

In a video statement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu classified the retaking of the castle as a strategic milestone. *"We have returned united, determined and stronger than ever. Now my directive is to deepen and expand our hold in places that were under Hezbollah’s control. The capture of Beaufort is a dramatic stage and a dramatic shift in the policy we are leading," the prime minister declared.

Critical Humanitarian Impact

The escalation of clashes has yielded devastating consequences for the civilian population. On Sunday alone, Israeli forces carried out more than 36 attacks across southern Lebanon, resulting in at least 12 deaths and 35 injuries, according to an Al Jazeera tally.

The overall overview of the crisis points to alarming figures:

Casualties: Since the intensification of fighting on March 2, the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health has recorded more than 3,412 dead and 10,269 wounded.

 

Displaced: More than one million people have been forcibly displaced from their homes across Lebanon.

Ineffective Ceasefire: A truce was announced on April 17 but has never been observed. Both sides trade mutual accusations of violating the agreement, with reports of near-daily Israeli breaches.

The "roadmap" presented by the US emerges as the primary diplomatic avenue to attempt to break the cycle of violence and prevent the region from collapsing into a full-scale war of even greater proportions.
