US Announces New Round of Israel-Lebanon Peace Talks in Washington Following Ceasefire Consolidation

Mediation led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio aims to establish permanent security guarantees and align enforcement with the global memorandum with Iran.

The United States Department of State has formally confirmed that it will host a crucial new round of direct bilateral negotiations between the sovereign governments of Israel and Lebanon next week. The high-level diplomatic meetings are scheduled for June 23 and 25 in the American capital, with the goal of cementing structural progress toward a lasting peace in the region.

The announcement comes immediately after the successful implementation of a renewed ceasefire on Lebanese soil between Israel and the Hezbollah group. The cessation of hostilities, which took effect yesterday afternoon, stabilized a critical military situation. The recent escalation of fighting and mutual bombardments along the southern border threatened to derail the global Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) recently signed between the United States and Iran to formally end the state of war in the region.

In a diplomatic conference held this Friday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke via telephone with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. During the call, Rubio emphasized Washington's official position that institutional and formal bilateral negotiations between the two nations represent the only viable mechanism to ensure Lebanon's national reconstruction, enable its full economic recovery, and definitively end recurrent cycles of violence.

The official working agenda in Washington will focus on resolving historical bottlenecks and establishing mutual security guarantees. The core pillars of the diplomatic summit include:

Consolidation of the Direct Channel: The official delegations resumed direct diplomatic dialogues in April this year, breaking a hiatus in formal talks that had lasted since 1993. Maintaining this discussion table in Washington seeks to institutionalize the communication channel for future crises.

 

The Litani River Line and Southern Governance: The scope of the preliminary understandings outlines the complete withdrawal of Hezbollah's military structures to the north of the Litani River. In parallel, the sovereign government of Lebanon aims to advance a roadmap for the disarmament of militias, backed by Washington's geopolitical support.

Territorial Sovereignty Guarantee: While Beirut demands the coordinated withdrawal of Israeli ground troops from the border strip, the US-Iran memorandum of understanding establishes a strict international commitment to ensure the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Lebanese State.

Although diplomatic channels are operating under emergency protocols, the situation on the ground remains under close scrutiny by the international community. Hours before the ceasefire announcement, a severe escalation of attacks in southern Lebanon resulted in dozens of casualties, prompting a sharp public warning from US President Donald Trump, who reinforced the imperative need to abide by the terms of the international treaty and warned that military deviations will not be tolerated.

The spokesperson for Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esmaeil Baghaei, stated that the success of the global memorandum will depend on the ability to contain domestic pressures that advocate for the perpetuation of conflicts. 

The White House expects next week's working sessions to yield a definitive roadmap with the force of a treaty, comprehensively pacifying Israel's northern border.
