The diplomatic impasse surrounding the political and military future of the Gaza Strip remains the primary obstacle to a lasting peace agreement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government maintain an unyielding stance regarding regional security. Despite keeping communication channels open, the group rejects the demand for unconditional surrender. The Hamas leadership directly links any possibility of total disarmament to the concrete and guaranteed commencement of a broad international political process culminating in the creation of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state.

With no point of convergence between the Israeli demand for the total dismantling of the group and Hamas's demand for national sovereignty guarantees, the behind-the-scenes negotiations have entered a phase of severe diplomatic friction.
