United States presents peace "roadmap" to contain military escalation between Israel and Hezbollah
In a last-minute diplomatic effort to contain the escalating violence in the Middle East, the United States government has put forward a formal "roadmap" proposal for the immediate de-escalation of hostilities in Lebanon. The initiative was confirmed by a senior US official in exclusive statements to the Al Jazeera network.
As part of the diplomatic offensive, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio conducted separate bilateral talks with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, seeking to align terms for a halt to the fighting.
Terms of the US Proposal
The plan structured by Washington proposes a direct trade-off between the warring forces to halt the cycle of attacks:
Hezbollah's Commitment: Total and immediate cessation of all attacks launched against Israeli territory.
Israel's Commitment: Refraining from further offensives and any new military escalation against the Lebanese capital, Beirut.
According to the US official, the central objective of this proposal is to urgently create a conducive environment in the region, serving as a foundation for a gradual reduction of current tensions and the establishment of a complete, comprehensive, and lasting cessation of all hostilities.
Washington Places Responsibility on Hezbollah
Despite its mediating role, the United States government adopted a firm stance when assessing the origins of the current conflict. The Washington official publicly placed the responsibility for the present round of fighting on Hezbollah.
The US government official formally accused the organization of operating under the direct influence of strategic directives issued by Iran, acting deliberately and without regard for the safety and real sovereign interests of the Lebanese population.
The US proposal emerges as the primary diplomatic card on the table to prevent the conflict from expanding into an open regional war of even greater proportions.
