With Beirut Spared by Trump's Pressure, Peace Talks on Southern Lebanon Advance in Washington

Under strong international mediation, the Lebanese delegation approached the fourth round of bilateral negotiations at the U.S. Department of State with the goal of consolidating a progressive ceasefire in the region. This diplomatic breakthrough follows the announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump that an agreement in principle has been reached between Hezbollah and Israel.

The resumption of dialogues in the American capital reflects a shift in military dynamics. Combined political factors forced the White House to significantly increase pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Given this scenario, the Israeli government found itself without the political leverage to frontally oppose Washington's directive, choosing to suspend bombings on the Lebanese capital.

The Temporary Deterrence Equation

Although the initial announcement was met with skepticism in Tel Aviv, a restricted tactical and geographical truce has been established:

Truce in Beirut: Israel has refrained from launching new attacks against the metropolitan area and the southern suburbs (Dahyeh).

Reciprocity Required: According to Israeli officials, the suspension of bombings in the capital is conditional upon Hezbollah ceasing rocket attacks against settlements and colonies within Israeli territory.

Continuous Offensive in the South: Despite the relief in Beirut, the Israeli government emphasized that military operations, bombardments, and ground incursions continue to advance in southern Lebanon.

Bint Jbeil at the Epicenter of the Crisis

While diplomacy progresses in the United States, the humanitarian and structural situation in southern Lebanon remains critical. The Shiite town of Bint Jbeil, historically proclaimed by Hezbollah as the "capital of the resistance," has become the epicenter of a campaign of mass destruction. Largely controlled by Israeli forces, the town faces methodical "depopulation" and severe structural damage that has rendered it practically unrecognizable.

Next Diplomatic Steps

The Government of Lebanon welcomed the reduction of hostilities in the capital and is attempting to capitalize on the political momentum to forge a definitive plan. The proposals currently under debate at the negotiating table include:

The full retreat and withdrawal of Hezbollah's armed forces north of the Litani River.

The complete dismantling of all the organization's military infrastructure in the border region.

The transfer of territorial control to the Lebanese Army, operating in an integrated and coordinated manner with the international UNIFIL (United Nations) forces.

The success of the negotiations in the coming days will depend directly on the Trump administration's ability to keep Netanyahu aligned with the agreement and on a sustainable resolution involving regional fronts of influence.
