In one of the most significant humanitarian developments of the year, Ukraine and Russia successfully concluded their 75th prisoner repatriation operation since the outbreak of the conflict. Facilitated through direct diplomatic mediation by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) acting as a neutral party, the operation solidifies this mechanism as the most consistent channel of direct cooperation maintained between the two nations in recent times.

The swap followed a strict "185-for-185" reciprocity formula, resulting in the return of 370 service members to their respective homelands. Additionally, the Kyiv delegation secured an extra humanitarian victory by obtaining the release of one Ukrainian civilian who had been held in Russian custody since the first year of the invasion in 2022.

According to detailed data from the Kyiv Coordinating Headquarters, the recovered Ukrainian contingent consists primarily of enlisted soldiers and sergeants, along with two career officers. Those returned represent combatants from virtually all major defensive lines—including Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Kyiv, and the recent incursion line in Kursk.

Key highlights regarding the profile of the repatriated include:

Mariupol Veterans: More than half of those rescued were captured in 2022, including historic defenders from the siege of the Azovstal steelworks and the fall of Mariupol.

 

High-Risk Missions: Among those freed is one of the Ukrainian servicemen who participated in the covert, high-risk helicopter supply runs executed early in the war to breach the Russian aerial blockade, deliver supplies, and evacuate the wounded from inside Azovstal.

Family Bonds: The operation was highlighted by the simultaneous return of a father and son who fought in the same brigade and had been captured just one day apart in 2022. The youngest repatriated soldier in the group is 26 years old, while the oldest is 62.

Reception on the Russian Side

Across the border, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation confirmed the reception of its 185 soldiers via an official statement. The Russian government reported that the entire contingent was provided with immediate medical examinations and psychological support as soon as they crossed the demarcation line, initiating their rehabilitation process within territory under Moscow's control.

Strategic Political Context

The successful prisoner exchange carries heavy political weight, occurring just hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky presented an open letter addressed to Vladimir Putin.
