US ANNOUNCES ISRAEL-LEBANON CEASEFIRE AGREEMENT CONDITIONAL ON HEZBOLLAH WITHDRAWAL

The United States government has formally announced that Israel and Lebanon have reached an understanding to implement the terms of a new ceasefire agreement. The confirmation follows the conclusion of the fourth round of direct trilateral talks mediated by Washington.

The definitive consolidation of the truce, however, remains under strict international scrutiny. According to the US Department of State, the effectiveness of the plan is strictly conditional upon Hezbollah immediately ending hostilities and completely withdrawing its military forces from southern Lebanon.

Diplomatic Context and Regional Pressure

The announcement from Washington reflects intense diplomatic maneuvering behind the scenes, involving other regional actors. In recent weeks, Iran's government had been exerting political pressure, signaling that the progress of its own negotiation packages with the United States was strictly dependent on the mandatory inclusion of safeguards and a guaranteed ceasefire in Lebanese territory.

Reality on the Ground and Recent Escalation

Despite the breakthrough at the negotiating tables, the situation on the border remains under high alert. Hours before the announcement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) maintained air and ground operations in southern Lebanon, striking strategic targets in the Nabatiyeh region and issuing evacuation orders for civilians to move north of the Zahrani River.

The agreement comes right after the most aggressive military period in the region in over two decades. Recently, Israeli troops carried out their deepest incursion into Lebanese soil since 2006, taking temporary control of the historic medieval Beaufort Citadel—an advance that faced fierce resistance from Hezbollah through the coordinated use of anti-tank missiles.

The coming hours will be crucial to determine whether military leaders on both sides will issue retreat orders and whether the international monitoring mechanism will be capable of ensuring full compliance with the terms agreed upon in Washington.
