US signs multi-billion-dollar deal to quadruple missile-interceptor production

The United States Department of Defense has formalized a strategic framework agreement with Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, allocating approximately $3 billion to dramatically accelerate the production capacity of key industrial components for next-generation air and missile defense systems, specifically THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) and Patriot PAC-3 MSE.

Faced with surging global demand, depleted strategic stockpiles, and escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, the Pentagon is moving to eliminate critical supply chain bottlenecks. The plan aims to quadruple the delivery rate of THAAD system components and interceptors, while tripling the production output of Patriot PAC-3 interceptors.

Key Highlights of the Agreement

Industrial Expansion: Northrop Grumman will serve as a strategic second source for solid rocket motors and ignition safety devices for Lockheed Martin's PAC-3 missiles (an agreement valued at approximately $2 billion).

THAAD System Strengthening: Approximately $1 billion will be dedicated to manufacturing motor cases, advanced composite structures, and thermal protection systems for THAAD interceptors.
