UK PRIME MINISTER ANDY BURNHAM VISITS KYIV ON UKRAINIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY FOR FIRST INTERNATIONAL MISSION

Prime Minister reaffirms unwavering support, announces defense technology sharing for long-term security, and co-chairs the Coalition of the Willing.

In his first international visit since taking office, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham arrived in Kyiv today to mark the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Ukraine’s independence.

During the historic visit, Prime Minister Burnham met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to reiterate that the United Kingdom stands completely behind Ukraine’s sovereignty and democratic resilience. Emphasizing that external threats only strengthen international resolve, the visit underscored a deepening strategic partnership between London and Kyiv.

Key Announcements and Strategic Outcomes:

Defense Industry Cooperation: The Prime Minister announced that the UK government has formally authorized defense firm MBDA to release classified information regarding British components used in the long-range SCALP missile (the French-produced equivalent to the Storm Shadow). This critical clearance paves the way for Ukraine and France to establish local assembly lines for the precision strike weapons, significantly boosting Ukraine's domestic defense manufacturing capabilities.

Coalition of the Willing Summit: Prime Minister Burnham co-chaired a high-level meeting of the Coalition of the Willing alongside President Zelenskyy, with key European partners participating in person and via video link. Leaders aligned on escalating sanctions against Russia's military-industrial complex, strengthening vital air defense networks, and securing immediate winter energy assistance for Ukrainian infrastructure.

International Recognition: Marking the significance of the alliance, President Zelenskyy conferred the newly established honorary distinction, the "Gratitude of the Ukrainian People," upon the people of the United Kingdom in recognition of their steadfast solidarity, political backing, and humanitarian refuge extended to Ukrainians.

Speaking from the capital, Prime Minister Burnham affirmed that the United Kingdom will continue to lead by example, ensuring that Ukraine possesses the robust tools, technology, and enduring alliances necessary to secure a lasting and just peace.
