Zelensky rejects elections in Ukraine during wartime and warns of political "tsunami" risk

The Ukrainian president stated during a briefing that holding a vote at this time would divide the country and demanded strict security guarantees from international partners, noting that no concrete proposals have been presented so far.

In statements made public on August 23, 2026, during a meeting and briefing with journalists, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky established a firm official position regarding the holding of elections in the country. The statement follows internal pressures, including recent remarks by his former defense minister regarding the resumption of the electoral process.

When questioned about the current political scenario, Zelensky was categorical in classifying the electoral process under the context of the armed conflict as an immense risk to institutional stability:

«I believe that during such a war, elections in general are great risks. Elections right now are a tsunami for the state that will divide Ukraine. Therefore, my strategy is to bring the country to the end of the war and preserve an independent and sovereign state. And I am fulfilling it»

Strict conditions for debate

The Ukrainian head of state pointed out that the government does not completely rule out the possibility of future discussions, provided strict requirements of security, legitimacy, and democratic inclusion are met, including combatants on the frontline and the Ukrainian diaspora abroad:

«My position was clear: if our partners offer us specific conditions in which elections in Ukraine can be held safely, legitimately and democratically – with participation by military personnel, in frontline areas, and abroad, where millions of our citizens have gone to escape the war – and safely – that is, without strikes and attacks – then we can discuss it»

Despite these considerations, Zelensky reiterated that no Western partner has presented practical and concrete proposals capable of ensuring the physical integrity of voters and candidates in the current scenario. The president added that the viability of the vote remains blocked by Moscow's continued refusal to accept an effective ceasefire.
