Vatican Expresses Concern Over Lebanon and Reinforces Diplomatic Support in Meeting with President Joseph Aoun

In light of persistent military tensions and ongoing impasses in southern Lebanon, the Holy See has elevated its diplomatic concerns. During an official audience at the Apostolic Palace with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Pope Leo XIV and the Vatican Secretariat of State expressed deep apprehension regarding the barriers hindering the implementation of peace agreements along the border.

High-Level Dialogue at the Vatican

The meeting, which took place last week, brought together the pontiff and the Lebanese president, alongside negotiations conducted with the Vatican's Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and the Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher. The central focus of the talks revolved around the stabilization of Lebanon's southern borders and the enforcement of the Trilateral Framework Agreement, forged under the auspices of the United States.

Warning Over the Agreement and Territorial Sovereignty

Although the Vatican reiterated its satisfaction with the initial signing of the pacification document, the Holy See Press Office issued a statement highlighting "serious concerns regarding the difficulties encountered in its implementation."

During the meetings, President Joseph Aoun detailed the impacts of recent military operations on villages and civilian infrastructure, appealing for the Holy See to use its influence in international forums. The Lebanese government urged Vatican support to demand the full compliance of clauses concerning the withdrawal of forces from the border zone, the facilitation of reconstruction in destroyed areas, and the safe return of displaced populations.

The Path to Stability

The Lebanese administration emphasized that the consolidation of peace must go hand in hand with the expansion of state authority across the entire national territory, ensuring that decisions regarding sovereignty, peace, and security remain exclusively under the institutional purview of the government of Lebanon. The Holy See assured its full support for diplomatic efforts aimed at guaranteeing the territorial integrity and definitive pacification of the Lebanese people.
