Lebanon and the Vatican Align Diplomatic Efforts for Regional Stability and the Implementation of Peace Accords

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun met this Thursday morning (20) with Pope Leo XIV in a private audience lasting approximately thirty minutes at the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. The diplomatic meeting placed at the center of the international agenda the urgency of consolidating peace in the Middle East, Lebanese territorial sovereignty, and the humanitarian and security developments in the south of the country.

During the meeting, President Aoun detailed to the Pontiff the political and military impasses affecting the full implementation of the Trilateral Framework Agreement signed in Washington, as well as the need for international diplomatic pressure to ensure the de-escalation of conflicts on Lebanon's southern border. According to official reports and statements from the Holy See, the conversation also addressed the indispensable role of Christian communities in preserving the cultural and religious pluralism of Lebanon and the region.

The Lebanese president's agenda in Rome builds upon the understandings established during Pope Leo XIV's apostolic journey to Lebanon in late 2025 and Aoun's prior official visit to the Vatican in June 2025.

Developments of the Mission in Rome

In addition to the humanitarian and ecclesiastical agenda with the Vatican, President Joseph Aoun's official trip to Italy is marked by strategic rounds of negotiation regarding the regional security architecture.

Review of International Forces: With the current mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) scheduled to end in late 2026, the Lebanese government is discussing with Italian authorities—including President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni—a joint Franco-Italian proposal for the transition or adaptation of the border monitoring model.

Security and Sovereignty: The debate in Rome focuses on strengthening the operational capabilities of the Lebanese Armed Forces to ensure long-term stability and compliance with diplomatic frameworks.
