Diplomatic Meeting in Jerusalem Aligns Next Round of Negotiations on Southern Lebanon

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu received U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa and U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee at his office in Jerusalem. The high-level meeting was also attended by Israel’s National Security Advisor, Shmuel Ben Ezra.

The core objective of the strategic encounter was to align positions and review security frameworks in preparation for the anticipated eighth round of indirect negotiations mediated by the United States, scheduled to take place in Rome.

The diplomatic discussions are grounded in the framework agreement articulated by Washington for border stabilization. The plan outlines the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, the effective deployment of the Lebanese army to the region, and the decommissioning of non-state military infrastructure.

However, progress in the talks has faced logistical and political impasses—particularly regarding the timeline and sequencing of the military withdrawal, the scope and pace of the advancement of Lebanese government troops, and the independent verification mechanisms for compliance.

The U.S. State Department reaffirmed that the understandings aim to secure long-term regional stability, while the involved governments continue to evaluate parameters to unlock the deadlocks at the negotiating table.
