Brazil and U.S. resume technical dialogue to discuss the impact of bilateral tariffs on domestic industry

Representatives from the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC) and the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) held a videoconference meeting on August 31 to initiate technical talks aimed at discussing the recent tariff regime and the impacts caused on trade between the two countries.

The resumption of formal dialogue channels follows the understandings reached between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the U.S. government, aiming to clear the way for in-depth discussions on the customs measures adopted in recent months.

During the virtual meeting—led on the Brazilian side by MDIC officials and by U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer—the Brazilian government highlighted the practical effects of the additional tariffs imposed on domestic products, reiterating the need to safeguard the interests of Brazilian industry and the productive sector.

Despite a mutual willingness to re-establish channels of communication, technical teams note that the process of reassessing trade barriers requires deep analysis and gradual negotiations. Further rounds of technical talks and diplomatic meetings remain on the agenda for the coming weeks, with the goal of seeking understandings that ease friction in bilateral trade.
