The banality of evil and the depth of good: a reading on Hannah Arendt's thought

Hannah Arendt’s celebrated reflection on the nature of evil—often synthesized in the idea that evil is never radical, but merely extreme, devoid of depth or any demonic dimension—invites a profound revision of the ethical and political concepts structuring contemporary societies. Far from representing a demonic essence or a force endowed with metaphysical density, modern evil manifests itself primarily in the absence of thought, the bureaucratization of cruelty, and the uncritical adherence to imposed norms.

To understand this formulation, it is essential to recall that Arendt coined the concept of the "banality of evil" while covering the trial of Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem. There, she encountered not a sadistic monster or someone consumed by pathological hatred, but an ordinary bureaucrat incapable of viewing reality from another's perspective and entirely focused on career progression and the mechanical compliance with orders. Evil, from this perspective, loses its spectacular and tragic character to reveal itself in everyday banality. It operates horizontally, covering the world like an epidermal plague that spreads rapidly precisely because it lacks reflective roots.

In contrast, the assertion that "only good has depth and can be radical" repositions ethical demands. While evil sustains itself on sterile repetition, blind obedience, and a vacuum of thought, good requires an act of creative courage. It demands the interruption of the automatic flow of things, the autonomous exercise of the faculty to judge, and the willingness to assume responsibility for the consequences of one's actions in the public sphere. Good is radical because it reaches the root of human existence and establishes new beginnings, whereas evil remains stagnant on the surface of empty destruction.
