Ukraine Calls for Anti-Ballistic Defense Reinforcement Following Week of Intense Bombardment Against Civilians
Ukrainian President confirms the arrival of a new IRIS-T system from Germany and new aviation agreements with Sweden, but warns of the urgent need for interceptor missiles.
In an alarming assessment of the escalation of Russian attacks, the President of Ukraine issued a statement detailing the devastating volume of bombardments that hit the country over the past week. Directly targeting civilian infrastructure, including power grids and residential areas, Russian forces launched:
More than 2,300 attack drones;
Nearly 1,560 guided aerial bombs;
108 missiles of various types.
Faced with this critical scenario, the Ukrainian government has intensified its diplomatic efforts to strengthen the country's air shield, achieving significant breakthroughs with European partners in recent days.
Air Defense Reinforcement and International Support
In a nod of gratitude to allies, the President confirmed the receipt of another launcher unit for the IRIS-T air defense system, sent by Germany.
"We thank Germany for its constant contribution to protecting people; thousands upon thousands of lives have been saved thanks to such strong support," the Ukrainian leader declared. However, he issued a practical warning: the effectiveness of these systems depends on a continuous supply of ammunition. "We also need missiles for air defense systems so that we have sufficient capabilities to repel Russian attacks."
In addition to German support, the week was marked by strategic developments with Sweden, which signed a new military assistance package focused on strengthening the Ukrainian air force, including Gripen fighter jets. The President also highlighted the importance of continuing financial and logistical contributions this year through the PURL initiative.
Anti-Ballistic Defense as a Top Priority
The Ukrainian government reiterated that the country's absolute focus right now is consolidating a robust anti-ballistic defense. According to the President, neutralizing the Kremlin's aerial firepower is the definitive way to turn the tide of the conflict.
"Strong air defense can provide greater protection for our people and deprive Russia of its last remaining advantage [on the front line]," he emphasized.
Closing the statement, the President sent a direct message to Moscow and the international community, reinforcing that global support must serve as a deterrent to Russian territorial expansion ambitions: "I thank all partners who are helping, who are ready to respond effectively to Moscow’s attempts to expand and escalate its war. It is very important that this be clearly understood there: choosing war will have consequences. I am grateful to everyone who stands with Ukraine."
