European countries and the EU summon Russian envoys following threats against Kyiv

The situation in Ukraine has reached a new level of severity this week. In response to an alert issued by Moscow, which advised foreign citizens and diplomats to leave the Ukrainian capital ahead of renewed air strikes, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and the European Union have officially summoned their respective Russian envoys.

The diplomatic move comes as a direct reaction to what the European Union has classified as an "unacceptable escalation." According to EU spokesperson Anitta Hipper, the threat against diplomats and foreign civilians violates basic international standards. "We will not be intimidated by threats," the German Federal Foreign Office stated in an official release, reiterating the country's continued support for Ukraine.

Context of the Escalation

Tensions escalated after the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday the launch of "systematic strikes" against military and industrial facilities and decision-making centers in Kyiv. The Russian government justifies the offensive as retaliation for a Ukrainian attack last week on a vocational school in the occupied Luhansk region, which allegedly resulted in 21 deaths.

In recent days, Russia has intensified the use of advanced weaponry, including the Oreshknik hypersonic missile, which is capable of reaching speeds 10 times the speed of sound. While U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reiterated Washington's readiness to mediate a potential ceasefire, the situation on the ground remains critical, with reports of continuous air strikes against residential areas.

The international community is watching these developments with concern as European diplomacy pushes for a full and unconditional ceasefire, aiming for the resumption of genuine peace talks.
