Israeli Offensive in Southern Lebanon Advances Toward Nabatiyeh, Aiming to Preempt Terms of Potential US-Iran Agreement
The military escalation in the Middle East has reached a critical new juncture with the advance of Israeli troops and airstrikes toward the strategic city of Nabatiyeh in Southern Lebanon. According to analyses published by the Lebanese daily L'Orient-Le Jour, the intensification of land and air operations reflects a strategy by Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to impose a "fait accompli" on the ground before diplomatic negotiations between the United States and Iran result in a comprehensive ceasefire.
While the US administration led by Donald Trump moves behind the scenes to broker a memorandum of understanding with Tehran focused on regional de-escalation—which would include a halt to hostilities across all fronts, including Lebanon—the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are accelerating their pace. In addition to Nabatiyeh, Israeli military pressure is heavily concentrated on the Tyre (Sour) district and the Western Beqaa region, accompanied by severe mass evacuation orders that threaten to empty entire cities.
The Geopolitical Triangle and Lebanese Sovereignty
Experts point out that Tel Aviv's stance aims to "raise the stakes" and shape the terms of any future agreement. By leveraging military force, Israel seeks to guarantee the effective withdrawal and disarmament of Hezbollah along its northern border, remaining deeply distrustful of purely diplomatic solutions that would restore the previous status quo.
Concurrently, Netanyahu is pressuring Washington to lift the diplomatic guarantees that have, until now, largely shielded the capital city of Beirut and its southern suburbs from the heaviest bombardments.
The conflict also lays bare the profound and historic political fractures within Lebanon.
The population and political elite remain locked in a heated debate over national sovereignty:
On one side, there is growing domestic pressure for the disarmament of Hezbollah and the restoration of exclusive territorial control to the Lebanese Army, accompanied by sharp criticism of Iran's regional agenda and influence over the country.
On the other side, there is widespread fear that Southern Lebanon is being subjected to a level of destruction and occupation comparable to Gaza, serving as a backdrop for expansionist ambitions in the region.
With the Lebanese state severely weakened and at a strategic disadvantage, the country's fate and the stability of its borders remain tied to the outcome of a complex chessboard played out through military resistance on the ground and high-level diplomacy between Washington and Tehran.
