Holy See Expresses Serious Concerns Over Implementation of Framework Agreement During Official Visit of Lebanese President

In an immediate official development today, the Holy See Press Office released a statement detailing the Vatican's diplomatic stance following the high-level meeting between the Pope and the President of the Lebanese Republic, General Joseph Aoun.

During the visit—part of the Lebanese head of state's two-day official itinerary in Italy—discussions focused on security challenges in southern Lebanon and the effectiveness of regional diplomatic understandings. President Aoun met with the Supreme Pontiff, followed by meetings with Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Secretary for Relations with States Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.

"While welcoming the signing of the document, the Holy See expresses serious concerns regarding the difficulties encountered in its implementation, and reiterates its support for the efforts undertaken in this regard."

 

Although the Vatican reaffirmed its satisfaction with the conclusion of the Trilateral Framework Agreement—signed at the end of June aiming to stabilize the southern borders—the public stance highlights warnings regarding practical obstacles encountered on the ground. The institution nevertheless assured its ongoing commitment to acting actively in international forums to promote a just and lasting peace.

Aoun's trip to Europe also includes strategic meetings with Italian leadership, such as Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. On the agenda are the future of the UNIFIL mission (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) and the evaluation of proposals for a multinational coalition designed to reinforce security along the southern border.
