Trump's Envoy, Jared Kushner, Meets with Hamas Leaders in Egypt to Discuss Gaza Peace Plan

Meeting seeks to advance proposals on disarmament and the future administration of the enclave, as Israeli attacks continue to spark humanitarian concerns.

Hamas leaders met in Egypt with Jared Kushner, son-in-law and special envoy for the Middle East to U.S. President Donald Trump. The objective of the meeting is to push forward the latest peace proposal for the Gaza Strip — a roadmap that was classified as "unacceptable" last week by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

According to diplomatic sources heard by the AFP agency under condition of anonymity, Hamas reiterated its commitment to the agreement during the meeting held this Sunday. In turn, Kushner pushed for the group's strict disarmament and the end of any future role for Hamas in the governance of Gaza. Axios reported that participants in the summit included the high representative for Trump's Board of Peace, Nickolay Mladenov, and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who is also a board member.  On the Palestinian and regional side, attendees included Hamas political leader Khalil al-Hayya, Egyptian intelligence chief Hassan Rashad, Qatari diplomat Ali Al Thawadi, and a senior Turkish official.

Key Points of the Plan and Reactions

The peace plan brokered by Washington calls for the immediate cessation of military operations, the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the enclave, the disarmament of Hamas, and the reconstruction of Gaza under a new civilian Palestinian administration.
However, implementation faces significant political and security hurdles:

Negotiation Stalemate: While Washington seeks to translate Hamas's disarmament into concrete, verifiable steps, the group states that it accepted the plan to avoid the full resumption of the war, conditioning its implementation on Israel first fulfilling its own commitments, including halting attacks and military withdrawal.

Israeli Concerns: Israeli officials expressed concern over the American demand to end targeted assassinations of Hamas fighters in Gaza. A meeting between Netanyahu, Kushner, and Mladenov is scheduled for this Monday.

Resumption of Conflict: Despite the announcement of a "ceasefire" in October 2025, Israel has resumed airstrikes in recent weeks. Recent actions in Khan Younis and the Nuseirat refugee camp have left new casualties.

Official Palestinian sources indicate that more than 1,250 people have been killed by Israeli fire since the ceasefire took effect, bringing the overall death toll since October 2023 to over 73,300.
