New Regional Arrangement in the Strait of Hormuz: Iran and Oman Formalize Technical Understanding Amid Tensions with Washington

The geopolitical scenario in the Strait of Hormuz has registered official diplomatic movements that are reshaping traffic dynamics in the region. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran recently confirmed the formalization of a technical understanding with Oman, establishing a new transit route map for vessels crossing the strategic waterway.

The project, focused on the technical management of the flow, provides for the implementation of separate routes, in which vessels would enter near the Iranian coast and exit near the coast of Oman, operating initially without the collection of tolls or passage fees.

Key Points of the Current Scenario:

Diplomatic Independence: Tehran emphasized that this bilateral agreement with Oman occurs autonomously, running parallel to any negotiations with the United States. The Iranian government reaffirmed that, to advance toward a broad and definitive reopening of the waterway with Washington, it maintains as fundamental premises the end of the naval blockade on its ports and the lifting of current sanctions.

Tension with the White House: The announcement of the agreement provoked an immediate reaction from Washington. President Donald Trump harshly criticized the Iranian-Omani initiative and issued new threats directed at Omã, warning the country should it compromise U.S. interests or the agreement sought by the United States for the region.

Behind the Scenes of Diplomacy: Parallel to the escalation of public rhetoric, diplomatic talks continue behind the scenes with the mediation of regional actors, such as Turkey, in an attempt to ensure the maintenance of the ceasefire and enable the definitive unblocking of the energy route.

The situation remains fluid, with the market monitoring the impact of these maneuvers on the stability of commercial flow in the Gulf.
