Mega-Avalanche and Flash Flood on Nepal-Tibet Border Leave Hundreds Dead and Missing

Mega-Avalanche and Flash Flood on Nepal-Tibet Border Leave Hundreds Dead and Missing

A major transboundary disaster has struck the mountainous region between Nepal and Tibet (China). The massive collapse of a glacier front in the Lhende Khola river valley triggered a devastating surge of mud, ice, and debris along the Trishuli and Bhote Koshi river basins, sweeping away villages, critical infrastructure, and border checkpoints.

Seismological analysis and satellite imagery confirmed that the event was triggered by a massive rock and ice fall—the impact of which generated a seismic signal equivalent to a magnitude 4.4 earthquake—followed by the sudden outburst of a glacial lake dam (GLOF).

Key Impacts to Date:

Casualties and Missing: Local authorities confirm at least 160 deaths (157 in Nepal and 3 in the Gyirong region of Tibet). More than 600 people remain missing along the valley, including over 300 foreign tourists and pilgrims.

Infrastructure Destruction: At least 19 bridges and long stretches of the highway connecting Nepal to China were destroyed. Hydroelectric complexes in the region suffered severe damage, disrupting approximately 430 MW of power generation.

Rescue Mobilization: Nepalese Army troops and Chinese emergency teams are working around the clock with the support of helicopters, sniffer dogs, and heavy machinery. However, thick layers of mud are severely hindering access to isolated communities.

Ongoing Alert: Civil defense and meteorological agencies in both countries maintain a high-level evacuation alert for communities along the affected rivers due to the risk of secondary damming and mudflows.

International agencies and the United Nations (UN) have begun dispatching humanitarian aid, medical supplies, and logistical support teams to assist the displaced and accelerate search operations in the impacted areas.
