The sudden and massive collapse of a glacier front at the headwaters of the Lhende Khola river has triggered one of the most severe geological and ecological events recorded along the border region between Nepal and Tibet in recent years. The collapse of the large mass of ice and rock unleashed a surge of mud, debris, and water that devastated inhabited valleys along the Trishuli and Bhote Koshi river basins.

The sheer mechanical force of the ice striking the ground generated a seismic vibration pulse equivalent to a magnitude 4.4 earthquake, detected by international geoscientific stations. The avalanche struck and breached upstream river and glacial dammings, creating a high-velocity mudflow that destroyed villages, bridges, cross-border connecting highways, and hydroelectric facilities.
