Ukraine Receives Bodies of 528 Combatants Preliminarily Identified Following Humanitarian Pause

The Government of Ukraine confirmed today the receipt of the bodies of 528 combatants handed over by Russian authorities. The remains, preliminarily identified as Ukrainian servicemen killed in action, will immediately undergo rigorous forensic examinations and DNA testing by the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs to officially validate their identities.

The logistical and humanitarian operation was executed under the coordination of the Coordinating Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, integrating joint efforts from the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the Commissioner for Human Rights, and with the active mediation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Following the cross-border transfer, forensic medical teams and criminal investigators assumed custody of the bodies to ensure that all international legal identification protocols are met. The Government guaranteed that, upon completion of genetic mapping, state structures will ensure the swift return of the remains to their respective families for funeral ceremonies with state honors. This return constitutes another humanitarian operation of this nature this year, following the repatriation of approximately 1,000 bodies recorded on April 9.

Framework of the Truce and International Mediation

This humanitarian progress occurs at the conclusion of a complex diplomatic framework recorded over the past week. The return of the bodies and the recent reciprocal release of 205 prisoners of war from each side, carried out last Friday, are part of the first practical phase of compliance with a macro plan designed under the direct mediation of the United States Government.

The aforementioned plan provided for the implementation of a pause in active hostilities during the commemorative period of Victory Day (May 9 to 11), setting a goal for the progressive exchange of up to 1,000 prisoners and the evacuation of military casualties. Although the theater of operations on the frontline has seen a resumption of kinetic actions after the expiration of the three-day truce, the parallel humanitarian articulation mechanisms for the return of prisoners and remains stay active and under scheduled execution.
